Context

The “Small But Mighty” project, developed for IAT 343 Animation, is a short narrative piece focusing on dynamic motion and character interaction. It explores the themes of perseverance and size discrepancy through a whimsical animated sequence. This project was a deep dive into the principles of animation, including timing, easing, squash and stretch, and anticipation.

Process

The animation was primarily created using Maya. Key stages included:

  • Storyboarding: Mapping out the scene progression, camera angles, and key moments.
  • Character Rigging: Preparing vector assets in Illustrator and rigging them for smooth movement within After Effects.
  • Motion Graphics: Integrating dynamic text, environment effects, and UI elements (as seen in the Framer demo) to enhance the overall experience.
  • Timing & Pacing: Adjusting frame rates and keyframes to convey the correct weight and speed of the characters.

Reflection

The final output is a 3-minute, 28-second animation demonstrating proficiency in complex keyframe animation, hierarchical layering, and sound design synchronization. The project’s technical complexity in combining multiple animation principles into a cohesive narrative was a significant learning experience in production workflow and creative problem-solving.
